TWO MAJOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS SET TO BEGIN

Butler County Engineer Gregory J. Wilkens reports that two major bridge replacements are scheduled to get under way this month. Federal funds will be utilized to pay for new bridges on Ross Hanover Road in Millville and Okeana Drewersburg Road in Morgan Township, according to Wilkens.

Construction will begin Monday to replace the Ross Hanover Road bridge which is located just east of U.S 27. The existing structure, a 40-foot steel beam bridge built in 1942, was closed in March due to advanced deterioration of the concrete deck; however, it was already slated for replacement this year. A contract for the project has been awarded to SK Construction of Middletown which submitted a low bid of $439,067. Completion of the project is expected in early July 2001.

SK Construction also submitted the lowest bid for replacement of the Okeana Drewersburg Road bridge, which will begin on April 23. The original structure is a one-lane steel truss 126-foot span across Dry Fork Creek and was built in 1927. Work on the $981,790 project is expected to take six months to complete with an approximate reopening date the week of October 21, 2001, weather permitting.

There will be no simultaneous closing of Okeana Drewersburg and the nearby California Road bridge, which is slated for replacement this fall. "Some local residents have expressed concern that both roads might be closed at the same time," Wilkens said. "However, the California Road bridge will remain open while a new bridge is constructed. Consequently, there will be no road closing conflict when construction begins on the California Road bridge."

The BCEO has scheduled five major bridge replacements for 2001 with an additional five bridges slated for deck replacements and structural repairs. For a complete overview of this year's proposed capital improvements, please see the Current Projects page or the 2000-2001 Annual Report Online.
