Butler County Engineer
Greg Wilkens recognized several of his employees earlier this
week for completing a series of on-the-job safety training courses.
The training included construction site safety, proper use of
hand and power tools, equipment use and inspections, electrical
safety, hazard communications, working in confined spaces and
with ladders and scaffolding, and fire prevention.
Fifty-one BCEO employees
now have dual certification from the NCCER (National Center for
Construction Education and Research) and OSHA (Occupational Safety
& Health Administration) for construction safety training.
Additionally, all field crews have completed the 10-hour OSHA
construction safety training, and all field supervisors have
completed the 10-hour and the 30-hour OSHA advanced construction
safety training.
"At-work safety
is critical," Wilkens said. "As we work every day toward
our goal of safer roads, it is important that our employees be
safe in the process. Safety training has paid dividends. It shows
in our productivity and the fact that we have fewer and fewer
accidents. This goes hand in hand with our overall philosophy
of creating value for the taxpayers and making the BCEO the best
engineer's office in Ohio."
Butler County Department
of Safety Director Utah Bailey noted that the BCEO is probably
the only engineer's office that has embarked on this type of
training. He added, "This was also the first step in what
we hope will become a Countywide safety training program. Most
of the training was performed in-house by local County employees
who are certified trainers. No outside funds were used."
