2nd Annual SW Ohio Snow and Ice Control Conference

While most of us are thinking warm weather and hoping for spring, local and regional officials will soon gather to talk snow. The region's second annual Southwest Ohio Snow and Ice Control Conference takes place this Thursday in Butler County. Presented by the American Public Works Association (APWA), the conference aims to bring together management teams and members of the public works community to hear and discuss methods for improving winter weather operations.

There will be several speakers and round table discussions covering topics such as innovative and best practices, alternative treatments, and ways to improve efficiency. Among the guest speakers are Abner Johnson, ODOT Statewide RWIS (Roadway Weather Information System) Coordinator; Dave Ray, ODOT Administrator for the Office of Management; and, Jim Balogh, Ohio APWA Chapter President.

Though only in its second year, the conference has already grown rapidly with over 200 registrants and 50 vendors. "It's a golden opportunity for plow drivers to talk to other plow drivers, mechanics to other mechanics, and so on," said Scott Bressler, Operations Deputy for the Butler County Engineer's Office. "The sharing of ideas, techniques, and information with each other is invaluable." The BCEO will have many of its own crews and supervisors in attendance, Bressler noted.

Conference details are as follows:

  • Date: Thursday, March 31, 2011
  • Time: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Location: Butler Technology Regional Public Safety Education Complex, 5140 Princeton Glendale Road, Liberty Township
  • Sponsoring agency: Southwest Ohio Branch APWA (American Public Works Association)
