Phase 1 Closing June 6
Hanover Township

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens reports that two Hanover Township intersections are slated for improvements beginning June 6. Located a half mile apart on Stillwell Beckett Road, the intersections at Morman Road and at Krucker Road will undergo safety upgrades to improve sight distance and turning movement.

The project will be constructed in two phases beginning with the Stillwell Beckett / Morman Road intersection. Crews will cut down a knob on Stillwell Beckett's east leg and add four-foot paved shoulders at the intersection which will widen the turning radii. A culvert will also be replaced just west of the intersection.

Phase two will involve Stillwell Beckett at Krucker Road where the vertical alignment on the east leg will be adjusted and four-foot paved shoulders will also be added to the intersection.

The project will correct sight distance issues at both intersections and make turning movements safer, particularly for larger vehicles like school buses and fire trucks. This pleases Hanover Township Trustee Fred Stitsinger who is also the township's Assistant Fire Chief: "Our squads make a substantial number of runs up these roads so the improvements will help a lot. It's a good project for our local citizens and all motorists who travel through Hanover Township as it will significantly improve safety."

A contract for construction was awarded to Mt. Pleasant Blacktopping of Fairfield which submitted a low bid of $486,309. Funding will consist of 100 percent BCEO money.

All work is scheduled for completion by mid-August, weather permitting. Stillwell Beckett Road will then be resurfaced as part of a separate BCEO contract. Crews will blacktop the road between U.S. 27 and Ohio 177, a distance of about 3.5 miles.

Road Closures and Maintenance of Traffic

Each intersection will fully close for its respective construction phase; however, the intersections will not be closed simultaneously.

Phase 1 closure - All three legs of the Stillwell Beckett Road / Morman Road intersection will close beginning Monday, June 6, 2011 for approximately five weeks. Upon completion of this phase, the intersection will reopen and construction will begin on Phase 2.

Phase 2 closure - All three legs of the Stillwell Beckett Road / Krucker Road intersection will close beginning in approximately mid-July upon completion of Phase 1. Work on Phase 2 is tentatively scheduled for completion by mid-August at which time the intersection will reopen.

During each closure access for local residents and businesses will be maintained up to the project limits but motorists will not be permitted to pass through the construction zone. Detours will be posted for all thru traffic.

Detour for Stillwell Beckett Road, both phases: Eastbound Stillwell Beckett Road will detour south on U.S. 27, east on Ohio 130, and north on Ohio 177. Westbound traffic will reverse this route.

Access to Morman Road (Phase 1): Access to the section of Morman Road between Ohio 130 and Stillwell Beckett Road will be from Ohio 130.

Access to Krucker Road (Phase 2): Access to Krucker Road will be from Ohio 130.
