Liberty Township

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens says his office is ready to construct its fifth major roundabout and promised that more are on the way. Crews will begin work in two weeks at the Kyles Station Road / LeSourdsville West Chester Road intersection in Liberty Township, necessitating a closure that will last for most of the summer. "We plan to start and complete the project while the Lakota Schools are off for summer break," Wilkens said, referring to Cherokee Elementary School which is situated on the intersection's southwest corner.

The school also factored into the BCEO's decision to improve the intersection with a roundabout. "This intersection doesn't meet the state-mandated criteria for a four-way stop or a traffic signal," noted BCEO Traffic Engineer Matt Loeffler. "At the same time we recognized that something needed to be done so a roundabout is the best long-term solution. It will provide a low speed intersection that is safe for motorists and pedestrians alike."

Roundabouts are known for their traffic calming ability, slowing traffic and efficiently moving vehicles through an intersection without completely stopping them. Their proven safety benefits have made roundabouts increasingly popular, according to Wilkens. "The success of our other roundabouts and the dynamics at this intersection made the roundabout a good fit," he said. "And we are planning more. Stayed tuned."

Kyles Station Road at LeSourdsville West Chester Road has experienced increasing traffic since construction of several nearby subdivisions and the new school a few years ago. Fortunately, accidents have remained low but the Engineer's Office says it is being proactive by improving the intersection now.

A construction contract was awarded to R.B. Jergens Contractors, Inc. of Vandalia, Ohio which submitted a low bid of $712,464. Funding will consist of 100 percent local BCEO money.

All work is scheduled for completion by mid-August, weather permitting.

Road Closing and Maintenance of Traffic

All four legs of the Kyles Station Road / LeSourdsville West Chester Road intersection will close beginning Monday, June 4, 2012 for the roundabout construction. The intersection is tentatively scheduled to reopen the week of August 20, 2012.

During this closure, local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles up to the project limits, but motorists will not be permitted to pass through the actual construction zone. Detours will be posted for all thru traffic.

Detour for Kyles Station Road: Eastbound Kyles Station Road traffic will detour south on Ohio 747, east on Millikin Road, north on Yankee Road, and west on Kyles Station. Westbound traffic will reverse this route.

Detour for LeSourdsville West Chester Road: Northbound LeSourdsville West Chester Road traffic will detour east on Millikin Road, north on Yankee Road, west on Hankins Road, and south on LeSourdsville West Chester. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

Motorists are encouraged to check the Road Closings page here on the BCEO web site as the best source for possible date and status changes concerning this closure.
