PRINCETON ROAD TO GET UPGRADE
Construction Begins June 4
Liberty Township

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens reports that Princeton Road in Liberty Township is slated for improvements beginning June 4. The vertical profile will be raised in a section between Ohio 747 and Van Gordon Road which will improve sight distance and allow the connection of Alana Place to Princeton Road, providing secondary access into the Reserves of Liberty subdivision. Additionally, a left turn lane to Alana Place will be added to westbound Princeton Road.

This project has been on the drawing board for almost a decade, according to Wilkens. It was delayed due to a dispute with Texas Gas over a cross country gas transmission line that runs underneath the roadway at this location. The line would require additional reinforcement beneath the proposed widened part of the roadway. At issue however was who would pay for it. The Engineer's Office contended that Texas Gas should foot the bill versus Butler County taxpayers, resulting in a suit against Texas Gas. After several years of delay and appeals, the courts ultimately agreed with Wilkens and the project was able to move forward.

Princeton Road was closed for several weeks last fall while Texas Gas made the necessary adjustments to their pipeline, thus enabling the roadway improvement to proceed this year. "We're just happy to get it under construction and are obviously pleased that the courts sided on our behalf," Wilkens said. "This project will make the road safer while enabling the long-awaited connection of Alana Place to Princeton Road. That in itself will provide relief to the residents of the Reserves of Liberty who won't have to enter and exit their neighborhood solely by State Route 747, which should in turn help 747 in the area of the Route 129 interchange."

A construction contract for the project was awarded to Mt. Pleasant Blacktopping of Fairfield which submitted a low bid of $471,109. Funding will consist of 100 percent local BCEO money.

All work is scheduled for completion by mid-July, weather permitting.

Road Closing and Maintenance of Traffic

Princeton Road will close 0.3 mile east of Ohio 747 and 0.4 mile west of Van Gordon Road for this roadway improvement beginning Monday, June 4, 2012. The road is tentatively scheduled to reopen the week of July 16, 2012.

During this closure, local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles up to the project limits, but motorists will not be permitted to pass through the actual construction zone. Detours will be posted for all thru traffic.

Detour: Eastbound Princeton Road traffic will detour north on Ohio 747, east on Millikin Road, south on Yankee Road, and west on Princeton Road. Westbound traffic will reverse this route.

Motorists are encouraged to check the Road Closings page here on the BCEO web site as the best source for possible date and status changes concerning this closure.
