WINTER STORM UPDATE
Road Conditions Improving

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens reports that conditions are improving on the County road system this afternoon. Most roads are wet to slushy while some, particularly in the northwestern townships, remain covered with a hard snow pack due to the heavy moisture content of the snow and the rate at which it fell.

Parts of Butler County saw snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour at times this morning making it difficult for road crews to keep up. "Plowing was a challenge because the snow was so wet and heavy," Wilkens said. "One thing that has helped is the fact that the ground is still relatively warm since we've not had much cold weather so far. That is making the salt more effective once we're able to clear away the majority of the snow."

One concern is possible freezing of wet road surfaces if overnight temperatures drop into the mid-20s as predicted. "That is warm enough however that the salt should continue to do its job," Wilkens pointed out. "Salt begins to lose its effectiveness below 20 degrees. Still, motorists should use caution this afternoon and tonight." Some minor drifting has also been reported by BCEO snow plow drivers in Reily and Oxford Townships, mostly "blowover" versus deep drifting.

While Butler County has been under a blizzard warning most of the day, true blizzard conditions never seemed to materialize here although snow did fall heavily for most of the morning. In keeping with the forecasters, BCEO road crews noted significantly heavier accumulations to the north and west while southeastern Butler County received less snow and more freezing rain.
