ROAD CONDITIONS IMPROVING AFTER LAST NIGHT'S STORM

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens reports that roads this morning are improving after yet another major winter storm. "Temperatures are still warm enough that the salt is working effectively," he said. "Our crews have most of our roads clear and passable and will spend the remainder of the day cleaning them up, clearing the berms, and treating any problem areas."

BCEO crews were sent out last evening around 5:30 and worked through the night. "We expect them to be out most of the day and if all goes well we should be able to call them in by late afternoon," Wilkens added. "It may be necessary to keep a few crews out tonight in the event that any re-freezing takes place. With temperatures predicted to drop into the single digits, we would caution motorists to drive defensively and be prepared for possible re-freezing of roadway surfaces."

Despite Butler County's position along the southern transition zone of this storm, road crews were reporting fairly even snow and ice coverage throughout the County. "There may be a few more inches of snow toward Oxford and a little more ice in the southeast quadrant, but a general 3-6 inches with a pretty good coating of ice seems to be the rule across the County," said BCEO Operations Deputy Scott Bressler.

Last night's winter storm was only the latest in what has been one of the snowiest winters in many years. But it was the first major icing event so far this season. Despite heavy road salt usage, BCEO salt supplies are holding up thanks to moderate but steady deliveries and conserving use when conditions permit, according to Bressler.
