Butler County Engineer
Greg Wilkens reports that Yankee Road will close for a bridge
rehabilitation beginning June 2. Located in the City of Middletown
and spanning Dick's Creek just south of Oxford State Road, the
bridge is a continuous steel beam structure built in 1968. The
Engineer's Office plans to rehabilitate the existing structure
by replacing the concrete deck and steel beams, replacing expansion
joints, and installing new approach slabs and guardrail.
A construction contract
for the project was awarded to the Eagle Bridge Company of Sidney,
Ohio which submitted a low bid of $1,107,259. Funding consists
of Federal LBR grant money and local BCEO matching funds.
All work is scheduled
for completion by late September, weather permitting.
While the jurisdiction
of County Engineers is primarily roads and bridges in unincorporated
areas, some bridges within municipalities are also the responsibility
of the county, per the Ohio Revised Code. These are typically
located on county roads that lead into municipalities such as
Yankee Road. Wilkens notes that the Yankee Road bridge carries
a high volume of truck traffic due to its location within a heavily
industrial area, increasing the wear and tear on the bridge.
and Maintenance of Traffic
Yankee Road will close
0.9 mile north of the Todhunter Road (or 0.5 mile north of MADE
Industrial Drive) and 0.1 mile south of Oxford State Road for
the bridge rehab beginning Monday, June 2, 2014. The road is
tentatively scheduled to reopen the week of September 22, 2014.
During this closure,
local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, and
emergency vehicles from either side of the bridge, depending
upon one's location, but motorists will not be permitted to pass
through the construction zone and detours will be posted for
all thru traffic.
Detour: Northbound Yankee Road traffic
will detour east on Todhunter Road, south on the south leg of
Yankee Road, west on Ohio 63, north on Ohio 4, and east on Oxford
State Road. Southbound traffic will reverse this route. Note:
Trucks unable to cross the railroad tracks on Todhunter
between the north and south legs of Yankee shall be required
to obtain a permit from the City of Monroe to proceed west on
Todhunter to Ohio 4.
Motorists are encouraged
