More big changes and
improvements are in the works for Mauds Hughes Road in Liberty
Township. Earlier this year a roundabout
was installed at the Mauds Hughes / Millikin Road intersection;
the old Mauds Hughes truss over Gregory
Creek is currently being replaced with a new bridge; and
now an even bigger project is set to get under way next week.
Butler County Engineer
Greg Wilkens reports that construction of a new bridge over the
Norfolk & Southern Railroad will start September 9 and take
more than a year to complete. The existing bridge, a 116-foot,
28-foot wide, 5-span structure built in 1911 and rehabilitated
in 1991, will be replaced with a new 117-foot, 32-foot wide,
single-span concrete I-girder bridge. The new structure will
be situated on a modified alignment that eliminates the sharp
S-curves approaching the current bridge.
project also involves replacement of another smaller concrete
slab bridge just north of the main bridge and improving the vertical
and horizontal alignments of 1,900 feet of roadway. Additionally,
Liberty Township is evaluating a project that would rebuild and
stabilize the roadway southward to Princeton Road, although nothing
has been finalized yet. If this project does occur, it would
be let as a separate contract and constructed in 2015 to coincide
with the bridge project which will already be under way. Doing
so will eliminate the need to re-close Mauds Hughes Road again
A construction contract
for the bridge project slated to begin next week has been awarded
to Sunesis Construction of Cincinnati which submitted a low bid
of $3,554,959. Funding consists of Federal grant money and local
BCEO matching funds.
All work is scheduled
for completion by late October 2015, weather permitting.
