Road Closing September 9
Liberty Township

More big changes and improvements are in the works for Mauds Hughes Road in Liberty Township. Earlier this year a roundabout was installed at the Mauds Hughes / Millikin Road intersection; the old Mauds Hughes truss over Gregory Creek is currently being replaced with a new bridge; and now an even bigger project is set to get under way next week.

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens reports that construction of a new bridge over the Norfolk & Southern Railroad will start September 9 and take more than a year to complete. The existing bridge, a 116-foot, 28-foot wide, 5-span structure built in 1911 and rehabilitated in 1991, will be replaced with a new 117-foot, 32-foot wide, single-span concrete I-girder bridge. The new structure will be situated on a modified alignment that eliminates the sharp S-curves approaching the current bridge.

This multi-faceted project also involves replacement of another smaller concrete slab bridge just north of the main bridge and improving the vertical and horizontal alignments of 1,900 feet of roadway. Additionally, Liberty Township is evaluating a project that would rebuild and stabilize the roadway southward to Princeton Road, although nothing has been finalized yet. If this project does occur, it would be let as a separate contract and constructed in 2015 to coincide with the bridge project which will already be under way. Doing so will eliminate the need to re-close Mauds Hughes Road again later on.

A construction contract for the bridge project slated to begin next week has been awarded to Sunesis Construction of Cincinnati which submitted a low bid of $3,554,959. Funding consists of Federal grant money and local BCEO matching funds.

All work is scheduled for completion by late October 2015, weather permitting.

Road Closing and Maintenance of Traffic

Mauds Hughes Road will close between Princeton Road and Millikin Road for the bridge replacements and roadway improvement beginning Tuesday, September 9, 2014. The road is tentatively scheduled to reopen by October 30, 2015.

During this closure, local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles from either side of the project area, depending upon one's location, but access directly into the construction zone will be limited. Detours will be posted for all thru traffic.

Detour: Northbound Mauds Hughes Road traffic will detour east on Princeton Road, north on Yankee Road, and west on Millikin Road. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

Motorists are encouraged to check the Road Closings page here on the BCEO web site as the best source for possible date and status changes concerning this closure.
