Event Scheduled for September 30

Butler County Engineer Greg Willkens will host a Winter Salt Crisis Roundtable for local and regional public works agencies throughout southwest Ohio next Tuesday, September 30. Sponsored by the Southwest Ohio Branch of the American Public Works Association, the event is expected to draw about 80 officials who will gather to share ideas about how to better conserve salt.

The panel style discussion will cover the following topics:

  • Salt conservation techniques;
  • Proper calibration of salt spreaders;
  • Use of liquids to increase effectiveness;
  • Media relations.

"Last winter's long, harsh onslaught drained resources and strained budgets so everyone is naturally concerned about what the upcoming winter will bring," said BCEO Operations Deputy Scott Bressler. "This is a chance for us to be pro-active in light of the well publicized salt shortages and what we can do to better conserve our supplies."

Officials from the City of Dayton, the Montgomery and Butler County Engineer's Offices, Miami Township (Clermont County), as well as other agencies will be on hand to present and discuss various ideas and techniques and to explain the current status of road salt across the Midwest and the rest of the United States.
