WAYNE MADISON ROAD IMPROVEMENT TO BEGIN MARCH 14
Wayne and Madison Townships

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens reports that Wayne Madison Road will close for roadway improvements south and north of Howe Road beginning Monday, March 14, 2016. The project will widen the existing lanes to eleven feet and add two-foot paved shoulders, improve the intersection at Howe Road, and upgrade signage, pavement markings, storm sewers and drainage. Additionally, four culverts will be replaced. The project limits begin 2,200 feet south of Howe Road and extend to 3,000 feet north of Howe for a total project length of approximately 5,200 linear feet.

Wayne Madison Road is a township road straddling the Wayne / Madison Township line and both townships have been involved in the planning, development, and funding of this project. The Butler County Engineer's Office coordinated project development, engineering, and utility relocations and will oversee the construction phase as well.

A construction contract has been awarded to Brumbaugh Construction, Inc. of Arcanum, Ohio which submitted a low bid of $898,514. Funding for the project will consist of State OPWC grant money as well as local funds from Madison and Wayne Townships in the form of State OPWC 0-percent loans.

All work is scheduled for completion by mid-July, weather permitting.

Road Closing and Maintenance of Traffic

Wayne Madison Road will close south of Howe Road, between Howe and Dayspring Lane, and north of Howe Road between Howe and Thomas Road beginning Monday, March 14, 2016. The road is tentatively scheduled to reopen the week of July 11, 2016.

During this closure, local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, emergency vehicles, and school buses but detours will be posted for all thru traffic.

Detour for Wayne Madison Road south of Howe Road: Northbound Wayne Madison Road traffic will detour east on Ohio 73 in the City of Trenton, north on Miami Street North which becomes Elk Creek Road in Madison Township, and west on Howe Road. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

Detour for Wayne Madison Road north of Howe Road: Northbound Wayne Madison Road traffic will detour west on Howe Road, north on Jacksonburg Road, and east on Thomas Road. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

Note about Howe Road: Howe Road will remain open through the intersection with the exception of a five-day full closure of the entire intersection. The timing of this five-day closure is expected to be toward the end of the project in late June or early July. While Howe Road is open, east-west traffic may pass through the intersection but only local traffic will be allowed access to Wayne Madison Road.

Detour for Howe Road during five-day closure: Eastbound Howe Road traffic will detour south on Jacksonburg Road, east on Ohio 73 into the City of Trenton, and north on Miami Street North, which becomes Elk Creek Road in Madison Township, to Howe Road. Westbound traffic will reverse this route.

Important notice for local residents north of Howe Road: A major culvert replacement north of Howe Road will require a full closure of Wayne Madison for approximately two weeks. This full closure will go into effect immediately, starting March 14, and reopen to local traffic only by March 25. The culvert is located between addresses #4570 and #4580. During this culvert closure residents south of the culvert construction should access their homes from the Howe Road side while residents north of the culvert will approach from the Thomas Road side.

Motorists are encouraged to check the Road Closings page here on the BCEO web site as the best source for possible date and status changes concerning this project.
