YANKEE ROAD TO RECEIVE MAJOR UPGRADE
Includes New Roundabout at Princeton Road
Liberty Township

A significant roadway improvement to Yankee Road is slated to get under way starting July 5, according to Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens. The road will be widened to add capacity and smooth out traffic flow, thereby enhancing motorist safety. "This project will be an asset to the community, providing easier access from the northern part of Liberty Township to Ohio 129," Wilkens said. "Widening Yankee in conjunction with a new roundabout at Princeton Road fits in with our overall plan to make commuting in this growing area much safer."

Specifically, the project involves widening Yankee Road between Dutchland Parkway and Princeton Road from two to three lanes --- one lane in each direction with a dedicated center left turn lane; a modern roundabout will be constructed at Yankee and Princeton Road which will involve closing all four legs of the intersection; one bridge will be replaced and another widened which will also mean full closures at those locations; and, adjustments will be made to the roadway's vertical profile. Additionally, sidewalk will be added between Dutchland and Wyandot Lane and signals will be installed at Dutchland and Yankee.

The project will involve multiple phases with various closures, so local commuters will want to pay close attention, Wilkens noted. "Construction will be challenging for motorists so we plan to do everything possible to make the process smooth and keep everyone informed. Our web site and Twitter feed will be the best sources for up to the minute information about construction and associated road closures."

All work is scheduled for completion by early next summer, weather permitting.

A construction contract for the project has been awarded to Barrett Paving Materials, Inc. of Middletown which submitted a low bid of $4,071,271. Funding consists of Federal and State grant money plus local Butler County funds.

Phasing, Maintenance of Traffic, Bridge Closures, Intersection Closure

In order to facilitate construction, it will be necessary to close Yankee Road between Dutchland Parkway and Princeton Road for five to six months this year. Construction will be suspended for the winter and will resume in spring 2018 with additional closures required.

There will be multiple phases that will involve varying closure points. Phases will be separate and nonconcurrent. Access to various points within and near the construction zone will change depending upon the construction phase.

Yankee Road will be closed to thru traffic between Dutchland Parkway and Princeton Road beginning Wednesday, July 5, 2017. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses along Yankee Road and to adjoining subdivisions; however, staging of traffic flow will vary depending upon the phase. Project phasing will be as follows:

Phase 1: All four legs of the Yankee Road / Princeton Road intersection will be closed for roundabout construction. Approximate length of closure: 3 months.
Phase 1 detours: Northbound Yankee Road traffic will detour north on Cincinnati Dayton Road and west on Millikin Road to Yankee. Southbound traffic will reverse this route. Eastbound Princeton Road traffic will detour north on Ohio 747, east on Millikin Road, and south on Cincinnati Dayton Road to Princeton. Westbound traffic will reverse this route.

Phase 2: Yankee Road will be closed half way between Wyandot Lane and Princeton Road for a bridge replacement. Approximate length of closure: 1 month.
Phase 2 detour: Northbound Yankee Road traffic will detour north on Cincinnati Dayton Road and west on Princeton Road to Yankee. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

Phase 3: Yankee Road will be closed just south of Wyandot Lane for a bridge widening. Approximate length of closure: 2-3 weeks.
Phase 3 detour: Northbound Yankee Road traffic will detour north on Cincinnati Dayton Road and west on Princeton Road to Yankee. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

Construction will be suspended for the winter and will resume in spring 2018 beginning with Phase 4. All roads will be open through the winter months.

Phase 4: All three legs of the Wyandot Lane / Yankee Road intersection will be closed. Approximate length of closure: 45 days.
Phase 4 detour: There will be no access to Yankee Road from Wyandot Lane during this phase. Motorists will exit and enter the subdivision via Wyandot at Cincinnati Dayton Road or by way of Stonehenge Boulevard. Yankee Road residents will need to access from either north or south of the intersection.

Phase 5: Widening of Yankee Road from Princeton Road to Dutchland Parkway. All roads will be open to local traffic only. Thru traffic will be rerouted.
Phase 5 detour: Northbound Yankee Road traffic will detour north on Cincinnati Dayton Road and west on Princeton Road to Yankee. Southbound traffic will reverse this route.

All work is tentatively scheduled for completion by mid-June 2018, weather permitting.

Motorists are encouraged to check the Road Closings / Traffic Advisories page here on the BCEO web site as the best source for phasing dates and status changes concerning this project.
