EMBANKMENT SLIP CLOSES ELK CREEK ROAD

Butler County Engineer Dean C. Foster has ordered Elk Creek Road closed approximately 0.8 mile north of Howe Road and 2.1 miles south of Ohio 122 due to an embankment slip. This emergency road closure is in effect indefinitely while BCEO engineers assess the extent of the slippage and possible solutions.

Crews were dispatched yesterday afternoon to close the road after a nearly 300-foot long crack developed along the roadway. There is a five-inch drop along 75 feet of the crack in the northbound lane which prompted the closure.

The slippage is probably related to instability that has plagued hillsides along the Elk Creek Valley for years Foster noted. Most recently, Elk Creek Road was closed in May 1996 as a result of an embankment slip near Sebald Park. That was a particularly wet Spring in which runoff from the hillside west of the road combined with high water in Elk Creek to produce erosion and slipping along the roadway embankment.
