BCEO SNOWFIGHTERS GET READY FOR WINTER

The Butler County Engineer's Office is getting ready for winter this week with its annual Snowfighters Truck Roadeo. The event gets underway today with driver safety training and maintenance reviews.

All drivers will review plow blade replacement, calcium fill procedures with gloves and mask, tire chain utilization, and emergency procedures for a stuck vehicle or an accident. Additional driver training includes a detailed vehicle safety inspection, driving assigned routes, and the traditional Roadeo competition tomorrow --- driving their snow plows through an obstacle course designed to simulate actual winter conditions. This year's competition will be held in the large parking lot at the old Fisher Body plant in Fairfield.

BCEO crews are responsible for keeping 267 miles of County roads safe and passable with eleven snow and ice control routes. An additional twelfth truck is utilized on an as-needed basis, particularly in the heavily populated southeastern townships. This truck has a wing-plow for multi-lane plowing --- it is outfitted with two blades and is capable of handling two lanes in one pass.

Salt Ordered, New Salt Dome Built

Salt for the upcoming winter has already been ordered by the Engineer's Office. A contract was awarded in September to IMC Salt of Overland, Kansas, which submitted a low bid of $27.70 per ton. The BCEO averages about 3,700 tons of salt for a typical Butler County winter.

A new, larger salt dome was completed this past summer on the grounds of the BCEO. County Engineer Dean Foster noted that the new storage facility holds 6,500 tons of salt, making it over three times larger than the old facility. "This will allow us to store more salt on site which will help in critical situations like we encountered last winter," said Foster. A two-week onslaught of unrelenting winter storms last January resulted in dwindling supplies throughout the Midwest.

New Snowfighters Web Page

The BCEO's web site has a new page this year dedicated exclusively to local snow fighting efforts. For an in depth overview of BCEO snow and ice control, please see the new Snow & Ice Control page here on www.bceo.org. Throughout the winter, motorists may also visit the Road & Travel Conditions page for local driving conditions and snow emergency notifications.
